The bandwidth is, in simple terms, the rate of transmission from your computer to and from the network. The measure tool distinguishes between these two types of speed, the first one is called sending speed and the second one is known as receipt speed.
Nowadays it is common for access providers and Internet services offer asymmetric connections solutions, some in which the speeds of receipt or sending of data are different. It relies on the fact that most of the flow of information that comes from the network goes to the client (for example, when you open a web page). The information that flows from the client to the network is much lower (in the above example, to send a page request).
The results of the test are provided in two units of measure at first different but interlinked. They are: bits per second (bps) and bytes per second (bytes / s). The main and only difference between both is the number of bits in a byte, since a byte contains 8 bits so that one unit can be translated into another easily multiplying or dividing by 8. Other measurement units are:

Kilobits per second (kbps): 1000 bits per second

kilobytes per second (kbytes / s): 1024 bytes per second

For example, for a connection via 56 kbps modem, the theoretical maximum speed would be 7 kbytes / s.

The measure of the speed depends on many factors, which may change anytime. Among these factors are the speed of the link between your computer and the site that is accessing, the state of the network at that time, the number of users accessing via the same service provider, or simply the number of applications running on your computer at that moment. That is why we recommend users to perform several tests at different times and not take values provided by the test as absolute, but as approximations.
The speed of data transfer on the Internet depends on numerous factors, including geographic location of the service that is accessed, that is why the results may differ slightly between some test speed and others. In addition the different tests that are available on the Internet are based on different methods to deliver the results, an aspect that can make change the above mentioned.
An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company that offers its customers Internet connectivity. This connectivity can be based on numerous technologies, from access through a telephone line to access via ADSL, ISDN...
ADSL is an acronym for "Asymmetric Digital Suscriber Line". This is a technology to access the Internet that uses an asymmetric connection. There is a difference between speed for receipt of information and transmission, the first higher than the second. Different types of ADSL exist depending on the speed of receipt of information, we will speak about ADSL of different number of kilobits per second. These are permanent connections made on the traditional telephone line and are able to make phone calls simultaneously.
ISDN is the acronym for Integrated Services Digital Network. This is a network technology evolution of the existing analog telephone network to offer end-to-end digital connections and be able to integrate a multitude of services on a single access. It offers the possibility of simultaneously maintain a phone connection, and other different connection of data at a speed of 64 kbps.
Service offered by the providing companies of Cable TV that presents a permanent connection to Internet with a higher speed data transfer.
It is a private line leased to a certain telecommunications company for a permanent connection between two points with a bandwidth reserved and guaranteed.
The current version of velocimetro.org works optimally with browsers Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0, Netscape 6.2, Mozilla 1.4 and newer.
Currently Velocimetro team is working to support other browsers such as Konqueror, Opera, etc.

To be able to access correctly both to this service of basic test of speed and to the rest of services of the new velocimetro.org is necessary to enable reception of cookies and Javascript functionality of the web browser.
    - Cookies enabled: For those users who use Microsoft Internet Explorer, they can access to the privacy configuration menu across Tools> Internet Options...>Privacy in which they must select an Average level of safety. Users of other browsers must enable cookies in a similar way.
    - Javascript enabled: Normally browsers allow JavaScript functionality by default, however there is a need to be careful with all those security programs that can disable this functionality.
This second version of velocimetro.org maintains the basic speed test of velocimetro.org.
Just click on the button Start of the home page and speed test begins.
  What is the test speed?
During the speed test your browser downloads and sends a test file from and to several servers located in Spain, the United States and Europe.
  Test file
At the beginning of the test, velocimetro.org estimates your connection speed. This allows us to determine the size of the test file. This size is proportional to your connection speed estimation: for example, we will use a file of 50 KBytes for a 56kbps modem connection and for a 512 kbps ADSL connection will use a file of 300 KBytes.
  Requested information
In order to complete the speed test, it is necessary to send a form containing some data. You should indicate the ZIP code from where the test is being performed, your connection type, and finally your network type.
    - Connection type: The connection you have hired with your Internet service provider (telephone modem, ADSL, cable, etc.).
    - Network type: Single connection ( if your computer is connected to the Internet individually) or Shared network (In case your computer shares with other computers the connection to Internet: offices, corporate networks, etc.)
  Results
Once the test is finished and stored in velocimetro.org's database we show its results.
First, we show the summary of the results obtained in download tests against all servers, comparing those results with the average of all the tests stored in velocimetro.org's database for this connection type.
Afterwards by clicking on the button detailed results you will see the detailed results of the test for each server (Spain, United States and Europe) in each direction (upload and download). These variables are the file size of tests used, the time spent and speed in kilobits per second and kilobytes per second compared with the average stored in velocimetro.org.
  Requirements
In order to access velocimetro.org's services, it is necessary to enable the reception of cookies and Javascript functionality in the web browser.
    - Cookies enabled Microsoft Internet Explorer users should configure their privacy level to Average. They can configure it by going to Tools> Internet Options...>Privacy. Users of other browsers should enable cookies in a similar way.
    - Javascript enabled: Browsers allow JavaScript functionality by default, however we should be careful with security programs that can disable this functionality.
Now a user can program the performance of test sets in periods of up to 24 hours without the need of intervention.
This service allows the user to obtain speed samples of their connections and to get their connection profiles according to the time slot, now in a easier way.
To access this service you must be a registered user of velocimetro.org .
  How it works
As in the basic speed test service, you must fill out a form with your Postal Code, connection type and network type, to program the automated test. Additionally you must indicate the time to wait before starting the test and its duration (from 30 minutes to 1 day).
Once programmed, your browser will perform speed tests every 10 minutes during the period indicated in the previous form.
  Results
During the wait intervals between tests, the results of the average, maximum and minimal speed obtained and accumulated along the automated test are shown.
At the end of the test, a speed summary appears for every server and direction of data flow. It also indicates the total number of tests developed and compared with the average speed stored in velocimetro.org's database .
To gain access to new advanced services of velocimetro.org such as Automated tests or Test history It is necessary to be a registered user.
Being a registered user of velocimetro.org allows you to keep track of all the tests carried out throughout the time against velocimetro.org.
Sign up now!.
This service provides to a registered users The possibility of accesing to the results of your tests against velocimetro.org up to the date stored in velocimetro.org database .
  Parameter selection
First you must select the period of time for the speed tests that you are interested in studying.
Later, you will have to select the week day slot: working days or weekends to access to a profile or other one of your tests.
Finally select the connection profile with the tests of your interest. A single user can have more than one connection profile: a user to connect from home with a certain type of connection, through a determined Internet provider and from a given Zip code and from work with other connection, and another provider from a different Zip can access through differentiated ways to the test results of both profiles.
  Results processing
Once selected all parameters, in case of existing tests for that profile, the average speed for each server (Spain, United States and Holland) and direction (upload and download) of the total testing selected profile are shown compared with the average stored invelocimetro.org.
  Chart of time slots
The user additionally clicking on the link view time slot chart (chart) can display a graph showing the evolution of the tests of the selected profile according to the time slots. This graph shows the speed of the user, the average of velocimetro.org, its maximum and its minimum.
Every time you do a speed test against velocimetro.org results are stored in the velocimetro.org database.
Test results contain the following information:
    - Results of the test: Test file size, time spent, average speed, maximum, minimum, server, direction, and so on.
    - Data of the tests: Connection type, Internet service provider, Postal code, browser type, operating system, date and time for which the test is performed, and so on.
This information set allows to obtain a series of statistics and reports about the quality of connection for technology of connection, Internet provider, time slot, region, etc.
Nowadays velocimetro.org gathers more than 1157620246169 speed tests with more than 5024227 results.
To start the speed test just "click" on the button
